Tips for handling common colds

As we enter the winter months, common colds become more and more prevelant. We have put together a few helpful hints to ensure that we all have a happy and healthy winter!

*      Ensure that children and adults wash their hands throroughly before eating, and after wiping noses

*      Throw away all tissues after they have been used

*      Teach and encourage children to cover their mouth when they sneeze or cough

*      Ensure that if children have fevers, vomitting or diarrhoea, that they stay home from day care until well again

*       Ensure that children and adults get enough rest. Our bodies cannot heal properly when they are tired and run down

*      Keep up the fluids. We need to replenish our bodies regularly with water to keep us from becoming dehydrated.

There is no real need to go to the doctor for a common cold. Because it is a viral infection, antibiotics cannot help.

However, you should see your doctor if you notice that you or your child has:

*       A persistant cough

*      A temperature of 38.5°C or higher

*      Headaches

*      Chest pain

*      Rashes

*      Vomitting

*      Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing

Ofcourse, if you are concerened about any symptoms at all, be sure to see your doctor.

Hope this helps!!!
